Strive Masiyiwa — Telcom Tycoon

As the founder and executive chairman of South African-based, Strive Masiyiwa is one of the continent’s richest men.

Under his leadership, Econet Wireless has developed, since its formation in 1993, into a global telecommunications enterprise with a presence in more than 15 countries in Africa, Europe and the East Asia-Pacific region.

The company operates in the core areas of mobile cellular telephony, fixed public networks, and internet and satellite services. A recognised entrepreneur, Mr. Masiyiwa has also been involved in the development of Africa’s independent media.

Masiyiwa has been in business since 1986. He first came to international prominence when he fought a landmark constitutional legal battle for 5 years in Zimbabwe. The ruling, which led to the removal of the monopoly of the state in telecommunications, is generally regarded as one of the key milestones, in opening the African telecommunications sector to private capital.

Outside his business interests, Mr. Masiyiwa is also active in promoting awareness of the impact of AIDS in Africa. A foundation he and his wife founded and fund currently provides scholarships to more than 25,000 orphans.
