Vital Capital
An impact investing private equity fund, Vital Capital has more than $350 million of assets under management. Focused primarily on sub-Saharan Africa, Vital is one of the world’s largest impact investors. Impact investing – an investment approach intentionally seeking to create both financial return and positive social impact that is actively measured – has been lauded as an emerging investment approach with the potential to reconcile key shortcomings in traditional financial markets. An example is Vital’s investment in Kora Housing, a company designing, constructing and delivering fifteen completely new communities across six provinces in Angola.
Denham Capital
An energy-focused global private equity firm. In July 2013 Denham formed of Endeavor Energy, an enterprise seeded with an initial commitment of $100 million from its $3 billion Fund VI raised in 2012. Endeavor will obtain co-investment from other financial investors and project level equity partners in the future.
The new company will invest in thermal — natural gas-fired and other technologies — and hydroelectric power projects in Africa. Its primary focus will be to identify and develop independent power projects in mid-to-late stage development within capacity short markets where the projects can help reduce the cost of power. Endeavor Energy will team up with local partners as it develops projects.
STANLIB Africa
Represents the investment businesses of the Liberty Holdings Ltd in Africa and has been operational since 1997. The investment business consists of Collective Investments and Asset Management businesses. These businesses are subsidiaries of Liberty Holdings Ltd and are branded STANLIB.
Standard Bank’s asset management strategy is to partner with Liberty Holdings Ltd in offering financial products and services in Africa. As a result, the Liberty Holdings Ltd investment businesses are found in Swaziland, Lesotho, Botswana, Namibia, Uganda and Kenya
Public Investment Corp. (SOC)
The Public Investment Corporation (SOC) Limited is one of the largest investment managers in Africa today, managing assets of over R1.17 trillion and still growing. The PIC, a registered financial services provider, is wholly owned by the South African Government, with the Minister of Finance as shareholder representative.
Eaglestone Asset Management (Nov. 2012)
Nigel Purse, former global head of project finance at Espirito Santo Investment Bank, and Pedro Neto, former vice chairman of ESIB, are to launch six private equity funds through their new venture Eaglestone. Five funds are targeting the African sub-Saharan market in areas including mining and infrastructure, and one is focused on renewable energy globally, each with a target value of US$100m.
